Remote Appointments

'Remote therapy' or 'distance therapy' (therapy over the phone, or via using specialised computer programmes such as Skype, FaceTime, etc.) can be a suitable option for people who are unable to (or prefer not to) attend face-to-face appointments on a regular basis. For many, this can be as effective as traditional in-person sessions.

There are several benefits to remote therapy. For example, remote sessions open up this form of help to those who find it difficult to travel to in-person meetings, such as those who have restricted mobility, are housebound for any reason, live in remote areas, do not have childcare, or shift workers and those whose jobs involve irregular hours or a lot of travelling. Also, remote sessions can save you time and money, because you don’t have to factor in the duration and cost of travelling to and from sessions. You can have your sessions from any convenient location, including your home and place of work, wherever suits you. Even if you are away on a holiday or work-related trip, you can still have your sessions as long as you have the technology set up. For some people, seeing a therapist from their own places makes them feel more relaxed, safe and in control of the process, allowing them to open up more readily. Some may feel less intimidated than being directly face-to-face with the therapist, discussing their intimate matters.

While remote therapy can be as good and effective as traditional in-person therapy, it has its own limitations and may not be for everyone and every situation. Some people basically prefer to see the therapist in person. Also, remote therapy is not suitable for people who have serious mental illnesses, or those in acute crisis or feeling suicidal. In addition, for web-based video conversations you need a reasonably high-speed Internet connection, plus a web-cam and microphone on your computer. If you are using your smart-phone, you have the microphone and camera already sorted. We will check these in your initial remote session. You also have to ensure you can be online at the appointed time, in a quiet space where you won’t be interrupted or overheard. Please bear in mind there is always a risk of the technology failing. We will agree what to do in the event of a technical problem.
